Birmingham Early Years SLC Project - FREE WellComm Training (All Cohorts)

WellComm Toolkit Training - Birmingham Early Years Speech, Language and Communication Project

All Cohorts (city-wide) - New dates for 2021/22

The Birmingham Early Years Speech, Language and Communication (SLC) – WellComm Project is part of Birmingham’s SEND Local Offer which is a programme of interventions which are planned to “Innovate to Save”. The SLC project will support a consistent universal approach to assessing and supporting children’s speech, language and communication needs.  To support this project, Birmingham City Council is funding free training and one funded Early Years WellComm Toolkit worth £500 to each early education provider.

The Early Years Foundation Stage states that “the development of children’s spoken language underpins all seven areas of learning and development”, therefore it is vital that we accurately assess and support children’s language and communications needs effectively.

As such if you have not managed to attend a training session yet, you are advised to book a place now.

Organisation: A partnership between Birmingham City Council Early Years & Childcare Team and Birmingham Maintained Nursery Schools
Contact: EarlyYearsSeminars@birmingham.gov.uk
Cost: Free
Places: Two delegates per provision can attend the training. Delegates who attend the session are expected to be able to facilitate SLC practice change within the provision.
Booking: Eventbrite

NOTE: This 2.5 hour training workshop is being offered across multiple dates (Sept-Nov 2021) to give as many people as possible across the city the chance to attend. The training session content is the same across all dates; you only need to attend ONE session.

Training Workshop Brief

Up to TWO delegates per provision can attend the session. This session will provide participants with:

  • City and district-based data relating to speech, language and communication outcomes for children

  • Information about how the city is planning to support improved outcomes for children via the ‘Innovate to Save’ projects

  • How the WellComm Toolkit can support the reformed EYFS 2021 requirement for supporting speech, language and communication needs

  • Information about how ‘Innovate to Save’ is funding and supporting a whole city, multi-agency approach to assessing and supporting speech, language and communication needs for all early years’ children using the WellComm Toolkit

  • Instructions on how to use the Well Comm Toolkit universally

  • Information about ongoing support and data collection

  • Following attendance at the session, delegates who do not have access to a WellComm Toolkit will be able to request a WellComm Toolkit funded by Birmingham City Council Innovate to Save Project. This will enable the provider to use the WellComm Toolkit as a universal tool in their provision to improve speech, language and communication outcomes for children.

Target audience:

  • Early Education Entitlement registered providers

  • Leaders/managers/teachers/childminders and practitioners based in Birmingham

  • Delegates who attend this session are expected to be able to facilitate Speech, Language and Communication practice change
