WellComm Project Update - Speech, Language and Communication

The speech, language and communication project is now beginning delivery for Cohort 3 which includes Edgbaston, Erdington, Selly Oak and Sutton Coldfield Districts

The project has achieved excellent engagement from the Early Years sector, which is a clear demonstration of how committed Birmingham is to improving speech, language and communication outcomes for early years children.

To date, 350 practitioners from Cohort 3 districts have already booked places but to make the biggest impact on children’s outcomes we are encouraging all early education entitlement providers to access the training and a Birmingham City Council fully funded WellComm toolkit.

Feedback from the training to date has been really encouraging with comments including:

“I have received it and have already completed 3 assessments. 2 green and one Amber, which is great. I am sharing the information with parents and they are working with their children to fill in any gaps. So definitely worth having and using it.” - Childminder

“I can't wait to use the toolkit and I can see that this will be very useful in practice” - Day Nursery

“Looking forward to using the toolkit with my children. Particularly enjoyed going through the workshop scenario together as this really clarified how easy it will be to implement.” - School

The Project is now extending and during the next couple of months, you will also have access to:

  • A clear pathway to access speech, language and communication advice from your district-based speech, language and communication champions

  • A clear pathway to access speech, language and communication support from specialist teams

  • Additional workshops which will offer more detailed information about speech, language and communication, including ‘Working with Children and Families to Support English as an Additional Language’ and ‘Communication Friendly Environments’

  • Targeted WellComm sessions for providers yet to access the workshops

It’s not too late to access a Birmingham City Council funded WellComm Toolkit and training for your provision, bookings can still be made. See all upcoming WellComm CPD sessions below:
