NEW COURSE: Supporting Babies and Children with SEND

Developing Local Provision (DLP) Level 2 Early Years SEND: Supporting babies and children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The Early Years Developing Local Provision [DLP] project is pleased to offer Birmingham practitioners working within Early Years settings, maintained nursery schools, or childminders, the opportunity to attend this fully-funded training and gain an NCFE CACHE Level 2 accredited award.

Aiming to inspire practitioners from across the Early Years sector, this training offers a balance of theoretical and practical support to enable practitioners to carry out their role in supporting young children with additional needs.

About the course

Course background

Back in 2019, the support for young children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) was at the heart of the development of this training.

By enabling all early years practitioners who support children and families with needs to have the confidence, knowledge, and understanding of the importance of their role, they can impact outcomes for children.

The training was developed by School Improvement Liverpool in consultation with practitioners within settings as well from feedback from other professionals.

We have colleagues from within Birmingham who are now trained to offer this course, in line with the Birmingham approach to supporting children with SEND. The programme will be offered starting in Summer 2022 through to Spring 2023.

The cost of the course and accreditation will be funded by the EY DLP project.

You will need to fund any cover needed.

What will the course cover?

The training supports practitioners to:

  • Understand statutory guidance in relation to the care and education of children with SEND

  • Understand how children learn and develop in the Early Years

  • Understand the impact of transition

  • Understand best practice for meeting the individual needs of young children

  • Be able to plan for individual babies and young children

  • Be able to work in partnership

How long will the training and qualification take to complete?

The course is three days long; each day will be from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

All sessions are a full day with breaks and study time allocated during each session.

The sessions are delivered weekly, with an additional week after the final session for all coursework to be completed.

Attendance is essential for all 3 sessions.

For online courses, participants will be expected to have cameras and microphones to be able to participate fully and be able to focus on this for the day, whether at work or joining from home.

What’s involved?

Each session will have a specific focus.

During the sessions, we will be discussing and exploring different information and strategies related to SEND.

Practitioners will have short gap tasks to complete and develop a portfolio with support from us.

How academic is this training?

The course entails some wider reading and some reflective practice when delegates can share their own experiences and practice.

How will the qualification be assessed?

Delegates will complete module-based assessments, all of which is explained to delegates during their first day.

Who should attend?

  • Room leaders or practitioners who already have at least a level 2 qualification

  • Participants need to be working directly with children to support the reflective element of the sessions

  • Participants should have the support of their manager

How many people from my setting can attend?

We want to reach as many settings across the city as possible and will allocate one place per setting, initially.

Additional people can apply and any unfilled spaces will be allocated based on the size of the setting and the district data profile.

When is the course being offered?

We are offering 6 different groups initially, subject to demand. You will need to sign up for one of the groups and complete the three days for that group.

How to apply

  1. Discuss with your line manager to ensure their support

  2. Check that you can attend all three dates for your chosen cohort/group

  3. Complete and submit this short online application form

What will happen next?

We will review all applications and email you to confirm your place, along with the details about how to join the Microsoft Teams sessions for online courses.
