NEW COURSE: CACHE Level 3 Early Years SENCo Award

Developing Local Provision (DLP) CACHE Level 3 Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators in Early Years settings.

The Early Years Developing Local Provision (DLP) project, in partnership with the Area SENCo team, is pleased to offer Birmingham practitioners working within early years settings, maintained nursery schools or childminders the opportunity to attend this funded training and gain the CACHE Level 3 Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators in Early Years settings.

Priority for places on this course will be given to settings where there is not already someone with the Level 3 SENCo qualification or National SENCo award.

About the course

Course background

The aim of this programme and qualification is to develop the knowledge and understanding of the Early Years SENCos, providing them with the skills to lead and co-ordinate Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) within their setting.

The course content focuses on developing strategies, practices, and policy to ensure children with SEND can make progress and meet their potential across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum.

What will the course cover?

The training will include:

  • SEND Code of practice 

  • Role of the SENCo in the Early Years sector

  • Working with parents and professionals

  • Networking opportunity with other settings and professionals ·

  • Historical context of SEND and education

Why attend?

Course completion enables individual SENCos to gain an accredited qualification and recognition for their role as an Early Years SENCo.

How long will the training and qualification take to complete?

The programme is 12 sessions; 10 direct taught sessions and two offering delegates the opportunity to explore and review other early years settings, including specialist provision:

  • Training will start in the Autumn Term (Sept 2022), running fortnightly, finishing at the end of the Spring Term (March 2023)

  • Participants will be split into four separate training groups.

  • Training will take place face-to-face at venues across the city 

  • All sessions are a full day (9:30 AM - 3:30 PM) with study time allocated during each session

  • Attendance is essential at all sessions

Who should attend?

This programme is for Early Years SENCos wanting to gain a qualification and recognition for their role as an Early Years SENCo.

Participants must:

  • Be currently working in an Early Years setting as a SENCo or looking to undertake this role

  • Already hold a Level 3 (or above) qualification in early years or childcare

  • Have a commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) and the support of their Line Manager

Who will teach the course?

Team members from Birmingham Area SENCo Team, along with Maintained Nursery School colleagues are accredited to teach the Early Years SENCo Award and will work in partnership with external assessors to deliver the course to Birmingham participants.

How academic is this training?

The course entails some wider reading and some reflective practice when delegates can share their own experiences and practice.

How will the qualification be assessed?

Delegates will complete two module-based assessments (maximum of 3,000 words per assignment), the completion of which will be explained to delegates during their first day.

Funding

The cost of the course and assessment is funded via the Developing Local Provision project.

To support settings, the DLP is also able to offer a contribution of up to £1,000 towards practitioner cover costs on successful completion of the course.

How to apply

We are delivering the course via four different groups, with places capped at 25 per group.

You will need to apply for one of the groups and attend all 12 sessions for that group in order to complete the training. Please see the dates below for each group.

Applications for the course will open on Mon 20 June and close on Mon 11 July.
